Excerpt from The Triangle: Town of Bruderheim approves a New Fire Hall! (May 21, 2010)
On May 5, the Town of Bruderheim Council approved construction of a $1.8 million fire hall. What makes the announcement unique is the funding partnership that was agreed upon with the Town's neighbouring municipalities.
Both Lamont County ($600,000) and Strathcona County ($200,000) agreed to significant funding contributions to ensure the success of the project. The Town has also secured provincial grants totalling $400,000 to pay for part of the project.
All parties agreed on the need and the importance of this investment to ensure safety in the Industrial Heartland where Bruderheim is located. The completion of the fire hall will truly be an example of regional partnership success.
"A fire hall for Bruderheim is long overdue," stated Bruderheim Mayor Fred Hawryluk. "This is another example of how our partnership with our neighbours benefits the citizens of Bruderheim. This new building will not only be a valuable facility for our fire fighters, but also another key piece to the infrastructure of our town."
Mayor Cathy Oleson of Strathcona County adds, "Strathcona County's contribution to this new fire hall was made to support our strong relationship with Bruderheim and mutual interests. The fire hall is good news to support emergency response for both Bruderheim residents and our County residents who neighbour the town."
Reeve Wayne Woldanski of Lamont County comments, "Lamont County's contribution to the new Bruderheim Fire Hall project is another example of our Council's strong commitment to regional cooperation with our neighbouring municipalities. The new Bruderheim Fire Hall is an important component to improve emergency response for our rural residents, the residents of Bruderheim and the adjacent Industrial Heartland area."
I addition to its primary purpose to support the protection of residents, the fire hall also provides secondary support related to industrial fire issues. For new industries looking to locate in the area, this can be viewed as an important advantage. The Town of Bruderheim fire department was the first responder to last year's $3 million wildfire that threatened just outside the Town's border. The Town fire department also acts as Lamont County's fire department for a 180-square-mile area.
The Town of Bruderheim has experienced a great deal of development interest since approving its "Tax Free for Three" policy. This incentive program sees taxes free for the first three years on all new home purchases. As well, a new 68-unit apartment building was approved for development, which represents significant growth for Bruderheim.
